What we tag

Every film in the catalogue is tagged for its setting geography (the real places its story inhabits), environment type (urban, rural, coastal, off-world…), story time period (the era the story is set in, which is often not its release year), and season. Together these describe the world of the film rather than its marketing genre.

Story setting, not shooting location

We tag where the story is set, not where it was physically shot. Apocalypse Now is tagged Vietnam, not the Philippines where it was filmed; a near-future thriller is tagged the near future, not the year it premiered. This is the distinction the big databases collapse, and it’s the one that makes discovery by setting actually work.

How a tag is made

• Each film is tagged by a language model reading its plot against a controlled vocabulary — a fixed set of values per facet, so “NYC”, “New York”, and “New York City” never fragment into three tags.
• Every tag is then human-verified before it ships. The model proposes; a person checks.
• Spot a tag that’s wrong? Open any film and flag it — flagged tags are queued for review and corrected in the next build.

Coverage

The catalogue currently spans 399 films across 185 real-world settings, 10 environment types, and 18 premises, from 213 directors. It grows as we tag more — and every page, the machine-readable index, and the structured data regenerate from one source, so nothing drifts.

Built to be cited
